Jumping In – Darlene Beck Jacobson

What’s in a word?
This month’s theme of “jumping in” reminds me of the importance of word choice in our writing.  A carefully chosen word can set a scene, tell a character’s state of mind, or paint a picture.
What does “jumping in” make you think of?  Taking action, being ready to try something unknown.  Being in charge.  “Falling in” on the other hand, conjures up defeat, accidents, not being careful, out of one’s control, clumsy, stumbling. Two totally different meanings that would change a character or story completely.
When you add a third choice, “diving in”, the possibilities increase.  Jumping in feet first is much safer than diving in head first.  Bigger risks, but maybe bigger rewards.
What’s in a word?  Everything.
