Creativity is Not a Superpower: Smack Dab in the Imagination by Dia Calhoun

Is drinking water a superpower? Is eating or breathing or talking a superpower? No, they are all everyday human powers, and so is creativity. It can certainly be cultivated and enhanced. Pearl divers learn to hold their breath underwater for two minutes and sometimes longer. We are all creative. Considering creativity to be special or a superpower makes it feel out of reach–you must be special or have some “gift” that others don’t. Creativity is like a plain red apple hanging on a tree or waiting in a blue bowl on the kitchen table. Just reach out and take it. Bite deep. Let the sweet-tart taste set your hands and mind humming.

Creativity should simply be regarded as another everyday, ordinary human splendor.
