The Door to Curiosity by Darlene Beck Jacobson
CURIOSITY is one of the hallmarks of writing. Asking ourselves those questions that make us want to explore and dig and find out where the answers might lead us. For me, tapping into curiosity channels the childhood wonder that is part of all of us. Those "I wonder what..." or "What if..." questions that let the imagination run loose.
Here's a short exercise to stretch your curiosity muscles in the new year:
Ask yourself: How is it possible that these side by side footprints are different sizes? What's going on?
Or, in the photo below, you might wonder what could possible be behind a door such as this.
Curiosity allows us to think of multiple possibilities and
to make up stories of what we imagine is possible. There is no right or wrong answer. It isn't about finding an answer so much as it is about exploring ideas that can take us to unexpected places. Those WHAT IF moments we instinctively channeled as children. Unexpected adventure.
What is behind this door? Who or what might live in a place like this? Or...if I go through this door where will I end up? What lives in the land beyond?
The possibilities are endless when we open up our door to curiosity and let it take us on an adventure.
Happy travels.
Darlene Beck Jacobson is always curious about what lies behind closed doors and often takes peeks into places to find out.
