Around the Next Corner (Holly Schindler)

When my last dog was still a puppy, he'd do the same thing over and over on our walks:

He'd go trotting down the street, fast as he could, tugging on the leash...

And when we got to the end of that street, his eyes would go wide and his head would jut back like he was thinking, Wait. There's ANOTHER road??????

It's the beauty of our younger readers. Everything in the world is new. Everything is a surprise. Everything is something to be navigated. Every road only opens up to another unexpected road.

It's easy to be curious about the world when all of it is new. You're having to learn all of it.

The trick is to find a way to tap into that as an adult in order to write for them in a way that feels realistic. For the most part, I love writing MG characters because they are not cool. They are not together. They are not polished. They are too new themselves for all that.

And that's what makes them beautiful.
