By the Way: Best News Ever!

I get asked a lot about my writing process. Well, for one, I am a glutton for punishment, and I tend to take the scenic route. But as a writer of historical fiction for young readers, there’s a few additional factors I need to keep track of that goes beyond having authentic artifacts and noting the correct years. It means that I need to integrate appropriate social constructs, and psychological authenticity that dominated the era, and illustrate the emotional connection between youth from 200 years ago to today (because being human doesn’t change, even if times change).

All the while integrating those fictional concepts like action and emotional plotlines, causal chains that connects these plot points, establishing authentic worldbuilding, and relatable characters.

My secret is postnotes. The greatest invention in the history of inventions.

So, first draft done. Now I’m making notes about all these other elements that need to be integrated.

(Yes, I finished another first draft. This is my second this year. My process may be too long winded for some, not as organic as others might like. But it works for me. And that’s the point of developing a writing process. Whatever works for you is the right process.)

And speaking of process, I guess I best get back to work because – BEST NEWS EVER! – I now have an agent! Sarah N. Fisk is an Associate Literary Agent in the Tobias Literary Agency! I am immensely honored to be working with Sarah!
