B-O-R-I-N-G? Maybe Not *December Theme from Jody Feldman*

2012
If you were to examine the whole of my writing life, it would be easy to look past 2012.
Books conceived, zero.
Books released, zero.
On such a blog as this, we could say ...
2012 for Jody Feldman? B-O-R-I-N-G.
And yet, this may have been the most rewarding year in my career.

Days before 2011 ended, I got the green light to turn The Gollywhopper Games from a stand-alone into a three-book series. And I’ve been writing with joy and purpose this whole year.

Beyond the writing, more rewards:
In March, I traveled to pick up the Georgia Children's Book Award and spoke with so many wonderful teachers and librarians and students.
Repeat the speaking part in May at IRA in Chicago.
Repeat again at NCTE/ALAN in the weirdness of Vegas right before Thanksgiving.
Add to that a number of school visits
and a full docket of Skypes, and you pretty much couldn’t keep the smile off my face.

As many of you know (and I’ve repeated ad nauseum), it took me a long time to call myself a published author. Perhaps that’s why I truly understand that timeline-worthy accomplishments are the products of seemingly insignificant years like 2012. And perhaps that’s why I tend not to judge that period from January 1 through December 31. Rarely does it tell the whole story, but it often can tell so much more.

  1. I understand EXACTLY what you mean, Jody. I didn't see a book release in '12, either, but I accomplished SO MUCH this year!

  2. There is so much more to being a writer than writing, which you certainly proved this year, Jody! Congrats on your book award!

  3. LOVE this post, this truth! And now I'm adding The Gollywhopper Games to my TBR list. (And I'm always happy to have a critique, so fingers crossed!

  5. Thanks, everyone, for you heart-warming words. I wish you could all win, but it's not like the Little League game in the movie Parental Guidance (very cute!). So I numbered all the entries (from comments here, on Facebook, and on Twitter), fed them to the Random Number Generator, and It has spoken. Congratulations to Stephanie Hewitt Rous! And Happy New Year!
